International Opening Ceremony 2018 and the Inauguration of Palestine Room at SZIU

An official International Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception for the academic year 2018/19 has been organized by the International Relations Office at Szent István University (SZIU) on 5 October 2018.  This year 1088 international students from 88 countries could start their studies at all study levels at SZIU within the framework of various scholarship programmes.

Prior to the ceremony, H.E. Marie Antoinette Sedin the former Palestinian Ambassador to Hungary, Prof. Manuel Hassassian the appointed Palestinian Ambassador to Hungary and Prof. János Tőzsér Rector inaugurated the Palestine Room. The name Palestine Room was given to the seminar room 312 in Gödöllő Campus after a refurbishment financed by The Embassy of Palestine in Hungary and private donations.  H.E. Marie Antoinette Sedin initiated the refurbishment of a classroom to express her appreciation to our university for supporting the integration and academic progress of Palestinian students.

The event was officially opened by Dr. János Tőzsér, Rector of Szent István University, who welcomed all the invited guests, professors and international students. Afterwards Dr. István Szabó, Vice-Rector for International Relations delivered his address. 

This year Szent István University conferred the title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Mr. Bernhard Lehnert for his continuous outstanding performance in talent management, education and industry related research, and the title of Honoris Professor on Mr. Dirk Stephan Biener for his outstanding support in scientific recognition of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Following the solemn inauguration and addresses, the esteemed ambassadors of Indonesia, Morocco and Palestine and the honorary consul of Jordan delivered their addresses. Her Excellency Wening Esthyprobo Fatandari, Her Excellency Karima Kabbaj, Professor Manuel Hassassian and Mr. Zaid Naffa welcomed the students - in particular, students from the countries and region they represented - and encouraged them to exploit the possibilities of the exchange and scholarship programmes they had been granted. Mr. Szabolcs Bokodi, Head of Higher Education Unit welcomed the audience as the representative of Tempus Public Foundation, the Hungarian national agency responsible for managing several national and international higher education programmes. Mr. Mohammed Al-Nussairawi, PhD student gave his speech as the representative of SZIU’s international students. He emphasized students’ responsibility for their communities and future.

The representatives of the embassies of Algeria, Brazil, Ecuador, India, Moldova and Nigeria and Ms. Gabriella Grüner from the Ministry of Agriculture were also among the distinguished guests of the event.

The integration of international students is a priority in SZIU’s internationalization strategy. This ceremony was part of a series of cultural events to enhance the integration of international students, one of Szent István University’s internationalization and educational goals.
