International Opening Ceremony at SZIU

An official International Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception for the academic year 2016/17 has been organized by the International Relations Office at Szent István University (SZIU). The ceremony took place in the Aula in Gödöllő on 29 September 2016.

The event was officially opened by Dr. János Tőzsér, Rector of Szent István University, who welcomed all the invited guests, professors and the international students. Afterwards Dr. István Szabó, Vice-Rector for International Relations gave a detailed description of the main scholarship programmes, namely Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship (launched by the Hungarian government), a scholarship co-financed by FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture, Erasmus+, Erasmus Mundus and CEEPUS.

The esteemed ambassadors of two particular countries, Algeria and Ecuador and the Consul General of Ghana were invited to the ceremony since these countries are among the ones that send the largest number of students to Szent István University.

His Excellency Abdelkader Dehendi, Ambassador of Algeria, Her Excellency Dr. Maria del Carmen Gonzalez Cabal, Ambassador of Ecuador and Mr. Péter Boldizsár Entz, Consul General of Ghana welcomed the students and encouraged them to exploit the possibilities of the exchange and scholarship programmes they had been granted.  

Mr. Vladimir Olegovich Rakhmanin, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia, highlighted the importance of education and drew the students’ attention to the benefits of working hard at university. Mr. Gábor Dobos, Head of Study in Hungary Unit, welcomed the audience as the representative of Tempus Public Foundation, the Hungarian national agency responsible for managing several national and international higher education programmes. Mr. Jamshid Karimov gave his speech as the representative of SZIU’s international students. He emphasized how important it is to be part of SZIU’s global community, learn about different cultures and establish life-long relationships. He also believes that every student - similarly to him - will remember their study period at SZIU as ‘the Golden Times’.

Her Excellency Marie Antoinette Sedin, Ambassador of the State of Palestine, Ms. Maryam Rehman, Chargé d'Affaires, Embassy of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr. Ashaber Wanna, Honorary Consul of Ethiopia, Mr. Le Trong Ha, Counsellor, Embassy of Vietnam, Mr. Giuseppe Rizzuti, Embassy of Italy and Ms. Gabriella Grüner, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of EU and FAO Affairs were among the distinguished guests of the event.

Finally, the guests were invited to attend a celebratory welcome reception, where the students had the opportunity to have an informal conversation with the guests. Royalsekt Zrt., the strategic partner of SZIU sponsored the event by providing Szent István Champagne for the reception.

This ceremony was part of a series of cultural events to enhance the integration of international students, one of Szent István University’s internationalization and educational goals.
